Related Breeds: Old White English, Standard American Bulldog, Old Southern Bulldog
Purpose: Is for “Guardian”, “Protector”, “Family Companion”, and “Functional Working Dog.” The Alapaha Blue Blood bulldog is suited for work in personal protection, livestock guardians and as catch dogs.
Overall Impression: Square, powerfully built, agile and athletic with a defined waistline. Males are larger, heavier boned and more masculine than females.
Temperament: Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldogs should be confident, social, alert and assertive. Aloofness with strangers is acceptable. Some assertiveness toward other dogs is acceptable but it is up to the judge whether to dismiss the dog if he/she is disrupting the class.
FAULTS: Overly aggressive or overly shy.
DISQUALIFICATIONS: A dog that is so shy it will not stand to be inspected (backs away or shrinks and cowers), or a dog that is so aggressive that it attempts to attack the judge or handler upon inspection.
Head: Large, flat across the skull squared in appearance, heavily muscled in males. A box or wedge shape is preferred.
Muzzle: broad with heavily muscled jaw, length not to exceed 40% of the skull. From stop to end of the nose, being 2.5 – 3.5” in length plus or minus ½”. The muzzle should be in proportion to the head size.
FAULTS: Pendulous lips, narrow muzzle, full continuous black mask
Nose: Preferred color is solid black or liver.
FAULTS: Any nose color other than black or liver. Pink or grey color will occur but are considered cosmetic faults.
DISQUALIFICATION: A nose that is more 50% non-pigmented
Bite: Teeth should be medium to large and should not be visible when the dog’s mouth is closed. Black pigment lining the lip is preferred, with some pink allowed. A tight undershot (reverse scissor) is preferred. Undershot ¼” to ½” is acceptable plus or minus 1/8” with no visible teeth.
FAULTS: small teeth, uneven teeth
SERIOUS FAULTS: Undershot over ¾” or wry mouth
DISQUALIFICATIONS: Parrot mouth or closed mouth with visible teeth
*Note: As a working breed the alapaha should not be faulted for broken or missing teeth
Ears: Rose ears preferred. Half perked with forward roll are acceptable. Ears should be carried close to the head.
FAULTS: Hound ears
DISQUALIFICATIONS: Cropped ears
Eyes: Almond-shaped to round, medium sized. Color brown or marble is preferred. Glass or blue eyes will occur.
FAULTS: Black pigment is preferred any other color is a cosmetic fault. Both eyes that do not match in color, pink eye rims, any visible haw.
SERIOUS FAULTS: Crossed or asymmetrical eyes.
Neck: Thick and of medium length
FAULTS: Short neck, too thin or weak.
Shoulders: Short length, heavily muscled, and well tied in with the front legs.
Chest: Wide and deep with a well sprung ribcage. The chest should not be narrow or excessively wide nor should the elbows be angled out or pulled in.
Back: Straight; length should be equal to height at the shoulders.
FAULTS: The back should not be narrow or excessively long
DISQULAIFICATION: Swayed back
Tail: Optimal length should reach the hocks in a relaxed position; come over the back when held erect. Final 1/3 of the tail to have a gradual upward curve.
DISQUALIFICATIONS: Docked tails, kinked tails
Forelegs: Straight an extremely thick-boned. Toes well knuckled up with thick tight pads. Dewclaws not removed. The feet are round and medium in size.
FAULTS: bowed legs, weak pasterns, cow hocks, open hocks, splayed feet and crooked toes.
Hindquarters: Hips narrower than shoulders; well-muscled and in proportion to the forelegs.
FAULTS: Narrow or weak hindquarters, weak pasterns, cow hocks, open hocks, bowed legs in the rear. Rear dew claw present or removed.
Gait: The gait should be balanced and smooth showing great speed, agility and power with a notable spring. The dog should not travel excessively wide, and as speed increases the feet move toward the centreline of the body to maintain balance.
FAULTS: Legs not moving on the same plane; legs over reaching; legs crossing over in front or rear; front or rear legs moving too close or touching; pacing; paddling; sidewinding
Coat: Short to medium length; fairly stiff with a soft undercoat.
Color: Any color and white. High points 40 to 60% color and white. Medium points over 60% color and white. Low points under 40% color and white.
DISQUALIFICATIONS: Solid colors and solid whites.
Size: Males 22 – 26” at the withers, weighing 70-95lbs.
Females 19 – 23” at the withers weighing 60-75lbs.
DISQUALIFICATIONS:
A male shorter than 21” or taller than 27”.
A female’s shorter than 18” or greater than 24”.
A dog heavier or lighter than the standard allows.
Other Disqualifications: Any dog that has been spayed or neutered, deaf dogs, dogs with undescended testicles and dogs with eyelids are turned out.
